A shocking case of caste atrocity against a minor has been reported from Wardha in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. An 8-year-old Dalit boy was made to sit on hot tiles as a punishment for suspected theft in Arvi in Wardha.
Though a case has been registered and the accused has also been arrested, the incident has once again brought to fore the sickening caste discrimination prevalent in India.
The accused, identified as Amol Dhore, suspected that the child had stolen coins from a local temple. Angered over the theft, Dhore tied the child's hands and forced him to sit on the scorching tiles in the temple premises.
"I went to drink water. They were drunk...They tied my hands and legs and beat me up and then made me sit on the hot floorI then somehow managed to run away," the 8-year-old victim said while narrating his ordeal.
After the victim's father came to know about the incident, he approached the police and a case was registered at the Arvi police station against the accused under the Prevention of Atrocities Act.
700 km away from Wardha, the issue resonated in the state capital Mumbai. The opposition will be raising the issue in the Maharashtra assembly. "This is a very serious offence. A child was treated like this only because he has been born in a particular caste...We will raise this issue on the floor of the house," Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde told reporters outside Vidhan Bhawan, where the monsoon session of the Maharashtra State Legislature started on Monday.
Women and Child Welfare Minister Pankaja Munde said that the state government has taken serious note of the incident and has instructed officials to take the strictest possible action. "Such incidents bring out reality in society...We as the government have taken action but it's also the responsibility of the society to Sintrospect," she said.
The Child Rights Commission is also expected to visit the place and provide counselling to the victim.
