Meerut: A Dalit woman aged 22 from Baghpat has been admitted to hospital with bullet wounds after local youth barged into her house and shot at her. She was immediately rushed to the hospital where her condition continues to be serious. The youth had been harassing her constantly after which she protested.
The crime occurred in Ramala region of Baghpat. Police said it was a case of old enmity between the two families and the girl's family alleges harassment of their daughter by upper caste youth.
According to the 22-year-old's mother Santosh Devi, "It's been two years since Sonu Jat has been harassing my daughter. We had complained to the police a number of times but no action was taken against him. This only emboldened him to such an extent that he forcibly entered our home and shot at my daughter. She has suffered injury in her eye and temple area."
SP city Ranvijay Singh said, "This is an old case in which the woman had earlier also named this youth who had been harassing her after which he was sent to jail. But he came out and continued to build pressure upon the woman to marry her. Friday night's attack was an outcome of that frustration it seems. We are looking into the matter and action will be taken in this regard."
