Noida: Reports have come in of two workers who died while working inside a sewage tank in Noida's Sector 39 today. A team of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) officials arrived at the scene and pulled out the two workers in the early hours of Friday morning. It is believed that the men died due to water suddenly gushing inside the tank, however, more details in this regard are awaited.
NDRF personnel arrived at the spot at 2.15 am last night and managed to pull out the body of the first worker only around 6.25 am. An official familiar with the operation told media outlets that both of the workers died after water gushed inside the tank without them being given any notice.
Earlier this year, two workers reportedly died as a result of inhaling toxic fumes while cleaning a septic tank in Gurugram. The incident in April of this year took place at an automobile company at Narsingpur in Haryana's Gurugram. Eyewitnesses claimed that the first worker went down the septic tank and returned. However, the second worker fainted after he climbed down to clean the septic tank, they added. Reports later asserted that the two men had inhaled toxic fumes which led to their tragic demise. They were rushed to the Kathuria Hospital by fellow workers where they were declared dead upon arrival.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took a concrete step to curb manual scavenging deaths by handing over as many as 200 sewer cleaning machines to sanitary workers in the national capital earlier this year. Developed by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the machines are equipped for hydraulic jetting, grabbing and rodding work. At the time of flagging off the machines, the CM was quoted as saying, "it is a historic day for Delhi to start this initiative".
