Uda Devi was from the Pasi Dalit community. He was born in Lucknow itself. She was the servant of Begum Hazrat Mahal, the last Nawab of Awadh, Wajid Ali Shah, as well as his bodyguard. Uda Devi's husband was included in the army of Mecca Pasi Nawabs. When the First War of Independence started in 1857 and during this time, when the Indian Revolutionary and the British Army came face to face in Chinhat, there was a fierce battle. Uda Devi's husband Mecca Pasi was killed in the war between the two. When Uda Devi came to know about this news, she took up a rifle in her hands like a soldier and in the First War of Independence of 1857, when the British army officer Colin Campbell had to rescue the trapped British soldiers and their families in the residency. British soldiers under the leadership were moving towards the residency, when more than two thousand Indian revolutionaries hiding in Sikandar Bagh attacked them. In such a situation, to save themselves, English soldiers attacked Sikandar Bagh with ammunition. More than two thousand Indian soldiers were killed during this attack.

Killed 36 British by climbing a Peepal tree

On 16 November 1857, Uda Devi Pasi climbed a Peepal tree at a distance of Sikandar Bagh. No one could see him because the Peepal tree was dense. From there he killed 36 Englishmen one by one through rifle. Those who were the captains of the British army, they were surprised that everyone was shot in the body and all died near the tree. Then he ordered his soldiers to shoot down the Peepal tree with bullets and his army did the same. Peepal tree was blown up with bullets from all sides. Then the body of Uda Devi came down from above and fell. When the British saw the face, they thought it was a woman. When the British got the identity of this woman, it came to the fore that the woman she is, is the wife of Mecca Pasi, who was killed while fighting with the British.

Name is missing from the pages of history

The name of Uda Devi Pasi is missing from the pages of history. They did not get the place that Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi and Begum Hazrat Mahal have got as well as other revolutionary women. In such a situation, despite playing such an important role in the first freedom struggle, the only woman who had killed 36 Britishers is nowhere to be found in history. However, to remember him, a statue of him has been installed in the Sikandar Bagh complex of Lucknow. Apart from this, his statue carrying a rifle has also been installed at Sikandar Bagh intersection. Historians believe that if at least one lesson of this great Dalit woman revolutionary is included in the curriculum of children, then people will know who she was. Amit Rai, Assistant Professor of Shia PG College, told that Uda Devi alone had killed 36 Britishers.
